Mother Nature Sends Us A Warning

A huge concert and fireworks show was scheduled for Omaha’s Memorial Park last night.  Instead, Mother Nature decided to put on her own thunder and lightning show.  And she accompanied it with 80 mph hour winds.

The storm that blew through eastern Nebraska and southwestern Iowa yesterday was stunning.  It wreaked havoc for hundreds of miles.  TV weathermen stated there were no tornadoes, but straight-line winds, incredibly heavy rain, and hail was bad enough.

The storm knocked down trees, uprooted trees, flooded streets, blew over several semis and trailers, and destroyed cornfields for miles around.  A lot of destruction was packed into a storm that in most places didn’t last much more than 15 minutes.

The concert and fireworks show in Omaha was cancelled.  That was probably a good idea, with trees and power lines down throughout the city, and 120,000 OPPD customers without power.

The Midwest has suffered through a spring of wild and whacky weather.  It seems like hardly a day goes by without storm warnings. Thunderstorms have spawned hundreds of deadly tornadoes, and produced 500 year flooding in many areas.

Is our weather just a nasty combination of unlikely circumstances, or is it a prelude as to what global warning has to offer?  I don’t think we can afford to assume it is the first scenario.  It is not only well past time for the U.S. government to get in line with other nations on this issue, we need to make our effort the 2000’s version of going to the moon.

Scientists have been warning that this is our last chance to make changes.  Some politicians want to call such scientists alarmists, but who do you want to believe, scientists, or politicians elected to office with the help of big oil company dollars?

I think Mother Nature is warning us too.  I want a world where my children and grandchildren can live, can grow, and can prosper.  I don’t want to think that one day exploration vehicles from some planet in another galaxy will be exploring Earth, looking for signs of ancient life, like we are now doing on Mars.
