A Meditation On Lawn Care

I am at a loss for what I should speak out against today.  I still don’t like big oil.  I still dislike drug companies.  I am tired of the Presidential campaign and it still has three months to go.  I still think airlines are whacked out.  My city has still not calmed from its brief bout with trying to enact a racist law.  That is a lot of stills, and I think I will take a pass on bashing thieves, politicians, and nit-wits today.

I guess what is irritating me most today is I have to mow my lawn.  It is hot out.  It is humid.  The grass is long, and my wife wants it mowed.

I don’t have a great lawn.  It is mostly green and mostly weed free, but it would never make a TV show or magazine article, good or bad.  I am ambivalent about having an underground sprinkler system.  I feel like I am wasting water and I feel like it is an unneeded addition to my utility bill.  If God wanted us to have green lawns, he would have created rain.

So, watering the lawn helps keep it green, and since the neighbors all do it, I have no choice anyway.  However, watering the lawn also makes it grow, meaning I have to get out the mower and git-er done.

Last year we had a service mow our lawn.  Actually, for the past few years we used a service.  Well, more than one service.  I am pretty sure it was more than three services.  They all start out doing a great job.  Then one week they come a day late.  Then it is a few days late.  Then it is late every week.  When they finally did arrive, it seemed like the important thing wasn’t to have my lawn looking nice, it was to finish mowing as fast as possible.

So, we switched and switched, and this year we are using Ron’s Lawn Care Service, i.e. me.  The funny thing about Ron’s Lawn Care Service is that he also seems to mow a day or so late regularly.  But he does do a good job mowing, and he is cheap.

Like I’ve said many times, sports stadiums should have real grass, and lawns should be artificial.  Now if I could just convince my neighbors.

  1. Actually there are a lot of alternative landscaping approaches that you can take to eliminate grass and maintainance like they do in areas such as Arizona.

  2. Thanks for giving insights on lawn maintenance. By choosing a lawn care company that takes the time to ensure that the lawn is cared for properly, one would seem to keep that company season after season.
