Late Night Entertainment For 12 Year Olds & Under, Or 55 Years Olds On Up

Before falling asleep last night I thought back to the good old days, the 60’s.  I am a product of the 60’s in many ways, but in this case I am thinking about a younger boy, not the one who attended college in the last few years of the decade.

What I thought about last night was covertly listening to late night broadcasts of ball games from the West Coast.  I listened to many baseball games on my transistor radio.  Cardinals, Cubs, and Twins games were broadcast by stations close enough to Fremont to pick up.  And when these teams played in San Francisco or Los Angeles, broadcasts did not begin until 10:00 p.m. our time, and ended well after midnight.

My Mother did not approve of my late night entertainment, especially on school nights.  One definition of covert is “covered,” and in my case it is the correct one.  Covering my head, ear phone plugged into the radio and my head, there was no way for Mom to know I was doing anything but sleeping. Late nights in those days were much easier to recover from than late nights in 2009.

Last night I wished I could relive those moments.  This was not just a longing for lost youth, I really wish I could listen to some of those games again, commercials and all.  I wonder if classic ball games, heck, to me anything in the 60’s would be a classic game, have been recorded and are for sale on the internet.  Download a game to your ipod, turn out the lights, and voila, it is the early 60’s and Ernie Banks and Willie Mays are playing. Jack Brickhouse or Jack Buck or Harry Carray are announcing.  All is right with the world.

That sounds so good.  I wonder if any of those games were ever taped.
